Cobra #038 - PART 1

Back in the Auto Trade Auction/Bill Jane days, on returning home to Broken Hill from one of my many buying trips to Melbourne with close friend Robert Mortimer, we called in to his family's Mortimer Ford dealership in Mildura, where he had in his office a promotional photo for the release of the Ford Falcon Cobra. I decided right then and there that I wanted one, especially as it was one of the last muscle cars.

Robert's dealership allocation was limited to a 4.9 litre Cobra, that held absolutely no interest to me, so on my return home to Broken Hill (at my own dealership non-Ford), I started to ring around Ford dealerships in Adelaide for any 5.8 litre Cobras, with my preference being the race version (homologated special).

I finally had success with Frontline Ford at Hillcrest, where they had on offer Cobra #038, a 5.8 litre manual with air conditioning and power steering (at the time not knowing it was 1 of only 10 in that configuration of the total 400 built). I closed the deal through Roger Crawford Motors (although I paid retail!) over the phone, sight unseen.
Cobra #038 arrived via car carrier to Broken Hill on the Bathurst weekend of 1978 (not the best in timing, considering both Moffat and BondÔ's Cobras expired during the race!). Cobra # 038 was driven by my father from 1978 to 1990 and was then retired until May 2005 when I decided that it was time for it to see the light of day once more.
15 years and some 121,152 km later and the first step involved renewing every imaginable part necessary (due to age), including rubber hoses, brake lines, genuine twin-plate clutch kit. I then replaced the original am radio with a genuine XC am/fm unit and had the air conditioner fully serviced, including conversion to the latest gas.
Cobra #038's original trim had only minor wear on the drivers seat, with the rest of the interior being in perfect condition. Despite that, (so that it all matched), I had it all re-trimmed in original Cobra blue-on-black fabric (supplied by Mark Pivodor who had also sourced it for the Falcon Cobra Club).
